Freedom Crusade: Lonnie Frisbee
Hello, my name is Roger Sachs and I am thrilled at the recent upsurge of interest about Lonnie Frisbee. Numerous websites, magazines, periodicals and film projects are presently featuring Lonnie as their subject matter. A simple google, youtube, or wikipedia search about Lonnie Frisbee will turn up a ton of information… and misinformation.
During the height of the Jesus Movement, Lonnie was featured on the cover of “Time” and “Look” magazines. He has been featured in multiple books, magazines, TV and radio appearances, as well as films and documentaries spanning nearly 40 years. In his final years he desperately wanted to tell his own story. It is one of the highlights of my entire life to have been a small part of the Lonnie Frisbee phenomena. I asked him once how he’d like to describe himself. He said . . . “I’m a hippie and I’m a happening!”. He had a great sense of humor. He constantly put smiles on our face with his wit and divine timing. The anointing on his life was truly amazing and unforgettable. Lonnie was totally sold out to God, and the Lord mightily used this unlikely candidate.
As a close friend of Lonnie I was given the rights to do his authorized biography. Lonnie personally recorded more than 100 hours of audio and video where he tells his own amazing story. In these tapes, he is exceedingly honest about his entire life. He openly shares about his childhood, including sexual victimization, his introduction to drugs during the wild sixties, as well as his dramatic calling. Many consider Lonnie the original “Jesus Freak”. He revisits the amazing way God used him as a catalyst in the “Jesus Movement”, the formation of “Calvary Chapel”, the birth of the “Vineyard” Church movement, revival in South Africa, Sweden and other countries.
Lonnie tragically died at only 43 years of age in 1993. What a shock. Myself and others had been doing a series of mission meetings with Lonnie, as well as traveling and working on several book and video projects prior to his death. Shortly after Lonnie’s death my family and I went on an extended missionary journey which consumed two years. I felt led to put all our Lonnie projects on hold until early 2007. Now I believe . . . “it’s time”. It is my heart that through the completion of these projects, God will once again use Lonnie as a spark to raise up a generation of radical, obedient, free from religion, young people (and old) that will take the love and message of Christ powerfully around the world.
Check this site often to keep up to date with the progress of our projects. You’ve heard the story from others. Now hear the rest of the story . . . from Lonnie himself.
